A Brief History of LAM Mozambique Airlines

LAM Mozambique Airlines, originally known as “LAM – Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique,” was founded in 1936, making it one of the oldest airlines in Africa. The airline was initially established as a department of the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation in the Portuguese colonial administration. In the decades that followed, LAM underwent significant transformations, transitioning from a colonial department to a state-owned enterprise and ultimately achieving full autonomy as Mozambique gained independence in 1975.

Following independence, LAM Mozambique Airlines became the national flag carrier and embarked on a journey to expand its network, fleet, and services. The airline has played a vital role in connecting Mozambique to other African nations and the rest of the world.

Fleet and Modernization

LAM Mozambique Airlines operates a fleet of modern aircraft that ensure the safety and comfort of its passengers. The airline’s fleet primarily consists of Embraer aircraft, including the E190 and E145 models. These aircraft are known for their reliability, fuel efficiency, and passenger-friendly features, making them well-suited for serving domestic and regional routes in Southern Africa.

As part of its commitment to modernization, LAM Mozambique Airlines has embraced new technology to enhance the passenger experience. The introduction of in-flight entertainment systems, onboard Wi-Fi, and other passenger-focused amenities has elevated the airline’s appeal among travelers.

It also introduced flexible booking policies to accommodate changing travel plans. As the world gradually recovers from the pandemic, LAM Mozambique Airlines is poised to play a crucial role in restoring connectivity in Southern Africa.
