It is named after Joaquim Pedro Salgado Filho, a Brazilian politician and military aviator who was born in Porto Alegre.

The airport has two terminals, one for domestic flights and another for international flights. It is the largest airport in southern Brazil and is served by several major airlines, including LATAM, Gol, Azul, and TAP Air Portugal, among others.
